blogging on my mind!

1. Watching with and without sound made the importance of sound and its intentions, so much more obvious. moving and powerful pieces like "mad as hell" dont even come close to the emotion they bring with sound.

The video "kinetic typography of human rights was really nicely done. It combined great type, with vectors and added smooth sound to give a great presentation. It didn;t overload you with crazy speed and iffy graphics.

Fight club chemical burn- rather good, it was more clever in its type treatment which made me like it.it had some crazy texture that i wasnt a huge fan of, but it was ok. The fonts were crazy as well.

Mad as Hell- probably one of the best one online at the moment. True emotion only available in the 50's and the type is really well executed.

Pulp Fiction- funny funny stuff. the type is smooth and clean and then the bloody part comes. very apporpriate, keeps you moving with it and interested. no texture needed. very nice. no music. just voices.

Wedding Crashers:the perfect girl- THIS is probably one the more advanced videos, and one the funnier ones. its very well done, the graphics are amazinng the type superb. i would for sure model mine after this and be proud.

30 unforgettable movie titles!

Well i love movie titles. so picking these are easy stuff.

#1 on my list SEVEN. Awesome intro, one of my favorites out there. it is the coolest in the business not to mention a badass movie.is dark, eery, and subliminal. pure awesomenesss.

#2 on my list- kiss kiss bang is a good one. good flow, style great style. it goes through a lot of different styles and all of them are prime.

#3 not on the top 30 but only cus its really new, is ZOMBIELAND. one of the coolest ones in a time where type is not really payed attention to. the type interacts with the live action in frame. very good. id watch it over and over again.

journal 11: Debbie MILLMAN

Debbie Millman is the President of the design division at Sterling Brands, an international design consultancy. She has been there for fourteen years and in that time she has worked on the redesign of global brands for Pepsi, Procter & Gamble, Campbell’s, Colgate, Hershey and Hasbro. Debbie is President of the AIGA, the professional association for design. She is a contributing editor at Print Magazine and the chair of the new Masters in Branding program at the School of Visual Arts. In 2005, she began hosting “Design Matters with Debbie Millman,” the first weekly radio talk show about design on the Internet.

Design Matters, like said above, is the first of its kind. and for someone to be the first in something in design is always impressive and im sure it feels a need that a lot of designers would like filled. not all of us are quite into the top 40 hits that seem like garbage to our ears. so good for debbie and the design world!

Besides that overview, she seems extremely down to earth, her interviews, are funny and coy and surprisingly humble. one would think to be a little more stuck up with the resume she has. When she interviews jakob trollback, she sounds like junior high school girl who has a crush on trollback's talents, which struck me as odd, but refreshing to hear such a refined professional be so amazed by another persons works. overall she is really cool and very impressive.

Futura MADNESS

well i was reading the main article, and i also read thirteen ways of looking at type. I really enjoyed these two articles a lot. There was a ton of truth to each one that i have personally noticed in my short time in the "know" of design. Futura is used everywhere, but i do argue that it is an attractive typeface. its clean, its readable, and decievingly modern looking even though its a century old.
Thirteen ways also made its point that there is a time, a place, and a reason to use every typeface, and that really got me thinking, so i tried to replace futura, or at least find some that i would call similar. so here it is:

Akizdenz Grotesk
Bell Gothic
Gill Sans
Gotham-Light
Kozuka Gothic Pro
Letter Gothic Std
Meta
News Gothic
Priori San

These are some pretty slick san serifs. i really do enjoy them. check em out!

who's the heavyweight champion of the world???

Muhammad Ali IS!

Here is his speech/:

Muhammad Ali College Tour.

First of all, id like to thank the student government body for inviting me here to speak at this beautiful and worthy occasion tonight. i would also like to congratulate them, on the great splendid stand to stop this bloody war thats now going on in vietnam. and as a muslim minister, my own outlook, on war and violence, is well known by now, and i would like to say that the number one greeting in my faith is peace. and that is isalamalahacm. which means may peace be unto you. there have been many questions put to me, why i refuse to be inducted into the united states army, especially as some have pointed out, many have pointed out. when not taking the step, i will lose so much. and i would like to say to um those of the press and those of the people who think i lost so much by not taking the step i would like to say that i did not lose a thing up until this very moment, i haven't lost one thing, i would like to say that i have gained a lot. number one i have gained a peace of mind, i have gained a peace of heart, i now know that i am in content with all mighty god himself whose proper name is allah. i have also gained the respect of everyone here today. i have not only gained the respect of everyone here today, but worldwide i have gained respect, people all over the world. and by taking the step, may have satisfied a few people who are pushing the war, even if the wealth of america was given to me for taking the step. the friendship of all the people who support the war, this will still be nothing if i am not content internally and if im not in accord with the will of almighty allah. as you read the newspapers and the press now, you see that im now in court. i am in court seeking justice under the laws of the land, in this country the united states of america, ministers are exempt from the armed services. and if they choose i am a muslim minister and a teacher of the religion islam, it has been said, that i have two alternatives, either go to jail or go to the army. but i would like to say that there is another alternative, that the alternative is justice, and if justice prevails i will neither go to the army nor i will go to jail. They say that actually every-time that i enter the ring in a way that im going to war, they say to me dearly, you are a prize fighter, what’s the difference? and i like to say to those critics of the press and the others. there is one hell of a a lot of difference in fighting in the ring, and going to war in vietnam, boxing is nothing like going to war with machine guns, bazookas hand-grenades bomber airplanes. my intention is to box, to win a clean fight, but in war the intention is to kill kill kill kill and continue killing innocent people. thats what’s the price of war. i would like to hear this from you. and the world and the cameras to hear. WHOS THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD?

Here is the questionier:/
Who Is Speaking– Muhammad Ali aka Cassius Clay

Why was/is the speech important to society? – it was apart of the anti vietnam war and civil rights movement.

Why do you feel this is important or interesting?
it was an important time in history, and he was an important figure that didn’t exactly have to do with politics but still played a big part.

What is the emotion, mood, tone, personality, feeling of the speech?
The emotion is calm, but passionate. his tone is low and steady but he builds on his words. The speech is slow, but motivating. highly political and personal.

What is the intonation, emphasis, what is loud, stressed, or soft. Where are there pauses…
Ali has his ups and downs. he stumbles from time to time with his words, clearly not a professional speaker but still very good. He emphasizes wrong doings, he clearly states injustices and obvious points. his words have a kentucky drawl, and the pauses are where he needs to read ahead.

What do you FEEL should be loud or soft, long pause or ruhed?
Ali does a pretty good job of correctly emphasizing words. “i have gained alot” section should be louder

Is there a call to action? When listening to it what are key/emphasized words?
Well there is a base message of anti war, and beings strong and firm in your religious beliefs. He really pushes how boxing is not like war, he emphasizes KILL KILL KILL KILL and how boxing is not like war at all. also he says “whos the heavyweight champion of the world” and he means it

8.How does it make you feel?
Personally i cannot relate, but it makes me proud to see someone stand up so much for what they truly believe in, and join a cause that truly needs the help.

How do imagine that the audience felt?
Im sure they were moved, he is often interruptted by applause or cheers of approval or agreement. At the end it is an all out roar of chanting and applause. It would have been quite the sight to have the most famous boxer in the world speak.

Could there be another interpretation of the speech?
It is a pretty clear statement

Write/Find a short bio, of the person giving the speech.
Name at birth: Cassius Marcellus Clay
Charismatic, outspoken and nicknamed "The Greatest," heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali was the dominant heavyweight fighter of the 1960s and 1970s. A fighter of exceptional speed, cunning and flair, Ali won the world heavyweight title on three separate occasions over a span of 15 years. He was born Cassius Clay, and under that name he won a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. After claiming his first title by defeating Sonny Liston in 1964, Clay joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Citing his Islamic faith, Ali refused to serve in the U.S. military during the war in Vietnam; his title was revoked and he was sentenced to five years in prison for draft evasion. (The U.S. Supreme Court reversed the conviction in 1971.) He had a long-running rivalry with fellow heavyweight Joe Frazier, whom he fought three times: Ali lost the first match in 1971, but won rematches in 1974 and 1975. Ali also defeated George Foreman in the famous 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" held in Kinshasa, Zaire. Ali retired from boxing in 1981, but in the decades since has remained one of the world's best-known athletes.

blog time at the 6 hour.

well i watched these videos, and they were quite funny actually. And you were right, i was kinda surprised at the answers they gave. But giving how quirky they all are, its not to far of a stretch.

So ill quickly summarize the 5 that i watched.

First off- Erick Speakerman: i mean of course he is a little balsy, and has that grumpy old man feel, BUT ITS ERICK SPEAKERMAN, i wouldnt expect anything less. and chose the alphabet as his number one inspiration, and the best design, which makes sense cus he is such a type freak, but also cus he looks like he was there when it was invented.

2nddddd- Joe Duffy- He was a pretty chill dude, his top design inspiration was natures design. I agree, if you just look at some of things nature has created, well then you should be damn astounded. He designed the Bahamas logotype, which i know a lot people really connected with and got inspiration from it. so good work joe duffy.

3rddddd- Edwin Chan- kinda a weird dude, but i totally relate to his words of wisdom. He talked about budhist monks using the mandala, and how the monks visualized all of their creations, and drew it in the sand. So Chan was alllll about creation through visualization, which is what i take pride in . so yes. im diggin it.

4thhhh- Kiko Farkas- this guy loves his simplicity. however he doesnt speak so clearly or simply. oddly enough. but he realy loves meaningful significant design, with not so many elements and just the right amount content.

5thhandfinal: CHIP KIDD- this guy is funny. this guy is just plain crazy. but he knows what he is talking about. He loves status, and being serious about ones self. He really wants to develop an identity. which he has personal done ten times over. but yes, he equates your quality of alchohol to your success, it is just funny. he is a funny man.

Back to the future of timelines of the past with process!

Project 2: TIMELINE: Organizing Information

Establishing order: Graphic design often relies on typography to commuicate order, information, and sytems. The goal of this project is to make things easy to read, navigate and understand. As you learned in typography one, the foundation for creating an clear informational structure is a a strong typographic hiearchy. Type size, wieght, and color are the the first steps. Graphic elements (lines, arrows, grids) and page structure are often used to aid in establishing a clear hierarchy.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
You will need to choose from one of the folllowing timeline choices...

TIMELINE CHOICES:
_ History of the Bathing Suit ( I CHOSE THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
_ History of Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions
_ History of Photography
_ Prehistoric Timeline
_ 100 years of Flight

CONTENT
_ timeline must have a range of dates
_ intro text
_ each point in time must have a date
_ and each point of time must have at least one sentence
_ images, icons, graphic elements are optional
Use the content from the website, you may use any additional resources for more information, images, etc. You may work in groups on collecting content.

CHALLENGE
How can you visualize the content? How can the audience get a quick understading about the topic? How are the pulled into the content to find out more?

TECHNICAL RESTRICTIONS
Format: poster or accordian folded book
Size: You determine the final size, poster min. size is 13 x 19 tall or wide
Color: Unlimited color palette
Typography: 2 typefaces, 3 type styles, and no more than 4 sizes of type.
Grid: proportional or ratio modular grid

Project Overview:

Well I kinda liked and kinda disliked this particular project. It was challenging as usual but something about it rubbed me just a little bit in the wrong direction. Either way, I got a final poster that I like, and that I feel fufills the needs of the challenge. This was a quick project, and I really wanted to span my ideas out a bit further, but im glad it was short anyway. Im pumped to move on to the next project and get that quick one under my belt as well. I looking forward to doing more work oddly enough. Even enough to do most of it over spring break.

First Steps...

First off, we needed to kinda just pick one out. Due to the quickness of the project, it was basically go with an interest and even if you didn't like it, you were stuck. So I picked the bathing suit just out of chance. So running with it, I started spitting out ideas. They didn't exactly scream timeline, or show it but the thought was there. there is also some pictures thrown in there.

Round Dos: well after some brutal research and some equally brutal critiques, i started going in a few different directions in order to get the right feel. i tried few of the sketches, like the thermometer, swim bouye lines, and an acordian style booklet. like such.

Round 3ish: Well so i continued with the booklet to no avail. it didnt show enough sense of time. So i with the advice of some friends and teachers, i simplified it down to JUST time, and JUST visuals. I came up with a kind of down stream sense, and with some photography tricks i remembered from high school, i came up with a global idea. a sweet techinique if i do say so myself.

Nearing Round 4!!!!!!!!: so after an enlightining critique, i decided to go with the globe idea. but i needed to make it better with a sense of time. I had a few different ideas. some side menus orientation, and vertical orientation, and then a rather skimpy one with no menu's however i think i like that one the best.

ITS THE FINAL ROUND! ALI TOLD ME HIMSELF THAT I WAS THE WORLDS GREATEST!:
So here below is the final product, i made a few adjustments with some stroke weight, some type errors, and even adjusted the color so it didnt look so purple. im happy how it came out, im happy that its over as well. During the actual printing, it was going perfect, literally until the very end. THE DAMN PRINTER CUT ONE WORD OFF. imagine how small that error is when the font size is 8pt. it was literally 1/4 of an inch that got cut off. i was not a happy man, so 8 dollars later, i readjusted, and had a perfectly printed print, and perfectly annoyed design student. o well. what we wont do for good design. nothing i guess. WELL WITHOUT FURTHER ADEIU! the final.

i hope you enjoyed. i did for the most part.
